A Forest Garden as a Learning Space for Permaculture, Environmental Education and Sustainable Land Use

Abstract

In autumn 2025, a permaculture-based forest garden was established together with a primary school group in the “Im Gründche” nature education garden. The project combines environmental education, sustainable land use, and social participation. Fruit and nut trees, berry bushes, low-maintenance peren-nial crops, and traditional heritage vegetables were planted. Additional measures included professional well construction, water-saving irrigation concepts, and ecological building improvements.

The project demonstrates how site-adapted planning, multi-layer planting systems, and soil regeneration can create resilient and low-maintenance productive gardens. The forest garden serves as a permanent open learning space and as a transferable model for projects of different scales.
