Abstract

To overcome the stagnation in the social debate on the climate crisis, new participatory communicationmodels are required. A promising approach lies at the intersection of art and science: by combining empiricalevidence with aesthetic experience, complex problems are brought to the wider public, allowingthem to become part of a transformative solution process.
We tested the practical relevance of this concept in the Oderbruch region of Brandenburg. The focus thereis on the ecological necessity of rewetting the Lieper Polder. The goal of this measure is long-term carbonsequestration through the restoration of fens—a vital contribution to climate protection that, however, stands in direct conflict with current agricultural interests. Since traditional political-administrative mediationattempts have so far failed due to hardened positions, we—as an interdisciplinary collective of artists, lecturers, and students—sought and found new forms of dialogue.
As part of a plein air workshop, the project participants developed a performative matinée (presentedon March 7, 2026, at Guten Morgen Eberswalde). Through the performative processing of the topic, wesucceeded in elevating the discourse to a co-creative level. A space is being created where people meeteach other without any hidden agenda. This approach made it possible to open new ways of understandingbeyond entrenched patterns of argument and to explore acceptance for necessary climate protectionmeasures within a regional context. The process has been revived.
